Welcome Letter
Dear 2008 Trail Rider,
The Outlaw Trail, Inc’s. seventeenth trail ride through the Outlaw Country of Wyoming has been scheduled for August 2-9, 2008. The ride begins at the "Hole-in-the-Wall" and surrounding area where Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and the Hole-in-the-Wall gang camped out and used as their escape from the Big Horn Basin. We will ride through the spectacular Outlaw Country of the beautiful Southern Big Horn Mountains with elevations covering 4200 to 9000 feet. The ride meanders along mountain trails, through streams, and you’ll see unique rock formations and scenic canyons. There will be 100 riders divided into four groups with each group rotating daily to the lead. We will ride 7 days with a daily ride covering 12-23 miles. This varies between 6 - 9 hours in the saddle. There will be five different campsites, with two-nights at the same location.
There is nightly campfire entertainment with singing, music, history, humor, and story telling. If you have any musical or other talent please feel free to bring along your instrument, singing, and/or story telling voice to join in. On Wednesday night there will be a live band and dancing for your enjoyment. Our food is all catered, serving a full western breakfast, sack lunches, and big delicious dinners. Our "Hole-in-the-Wall" saloon will have beer, soda, juice, Gatorade, and bottled water available for a cool one after the daily ride at an additional fee.
The rider’s fee includes a pen for your horse at the fairgrounds before and after the ride, orientation dinner Saturday, August 2, 2008. It also includes breakfast the next morning, and transportation to the trailhead for you and your horse, three meals a day while on the trail, water, hay, and grain, nightly entertainment, and admission to the Western extravaganza on Saturday, August 9, 2008. Because our ride fills up rapidly I recommend you get your application in early. We do offer discounts to early applicants.
The town of Thermopolis and Hot Springs State Park have many recreational activities to entertain you before and after the ride. Be sure to visit the Wyoming Dinosaur Museum and Dig Site, Hot Springs County Museum (home of the Hole-in-the-Wall back bar). There is also fishing and boating on the Big Horn River (#1 Blue Ribbon Trout River) and Boysen Reservoir, white water and scenic float trips, golf, or just soaking and relaxing in our hot mineral water. Plan to spend a few extra days in Thermopolis and enjoy our outstanding WESTERN HOSPITALITY.
A more detailed information packet will be mailed to you upon receipt of your application, fee, and signed assumption of risk. Please read over all of this information carefully.
Our Trail Ride Committee members are all volunteers from Thermopolis and the surrounding communities and they work very hard year round to make the Outlaw Trail Ride possible. Outlaw Trail, Inc. is a non profit organization and all proceeds from the trail ride go to charitable causes in Thermopolis and surrounding communities. A sizeable donation from the 2004 ride went to help a patient in Thermopolis to receive a liver transplant. Over the years we have also helped a number of students by providing scholarships and other monetary donations to charitable causes.
So become an outlaw for a week and enjoy the greatest, most memorable experience of your life. See the unsurpassed beauty and tranquility of the great outdoors of big wonderful Wyoming and ride the very trails of Butch Cassidy, the Sundance Kid, and the Hole-in-the-wall Gang.
Happy Trails to You and Yours,
The Outlaw Trail Ride
