The trail today is 21 miles. The ride out of the campsite goes up and across a
mesa where it follows the tracks made by pioneers traveling the “Jim Bridger
Trail.” Then the trail begins to climb to the top of “Copper Mountain”, passing
by “Guffey Peak” on the way. From here the Wind River Mountain Range and the
Boysen Reservoir can be seen to the southwest, Owl Creek Mountains to the west,
and the Big Horn Mountains to the northeast. Copper mountain got its name from
early pioneers that mined copper from the area. Other ores found on the mountain
included; gold, silver, tungsten, and feldspar. The mining ended in 1910. Friday
evening’s camp lies in a valley where the “Bird’s Eye Stage Station” was
located. It was along the stage route from Shoshoni to Thermopolis. Upon arrival
in camp, tend to your horse, set up tents, and prepare for
supper.
